How Is an Aluminium Door Price Calculated?
An aluminium door price is normally quoted against the area of the opening, with the rate built up from eight things: the system chosen, the profile series and its wall thickness, the glass specification, the hardware brand and grade, the finish, the number of leaves, the installation scope and the site conditions.
Because the rate follows the actual opening, a dependable figure needs a site measurement rather than an approximate size. Alurac measures on site and then quotes with profile, glass, hardware and installation listed separately, so the rate can be compared line by line against any other offer. Why Two Quotations for the Same Door Differ
Most buyers collect three quotations, line them up and pick the middle one. The trouble is that the three are rarely quoting the same door. One has a deeper section, another has toughened glass where the third has ordinary glass, and only one of them has included the fitting.
None of that is visible in the total. It becomes visible later, when a shutter stops meeting its gasket, when a handle works loose, or when the fitting turns out to be a separate bill. Comparing an aluminium door price properly means comparing the specification first and the number second.
- Section and wall thickness stated, not just described as aluminium.
- Glass named as toughened, laminated or double glazed rather than left vague.
- Hardware brand and grade written down so it can be checked.
- Finish and shade specified, with any premium shown as its own line.
- Installation scope either included or excluded in writing.
What Decides an Aluminium Door Price
Eight factors build the rate. Change any one of them and the total moves, which is why two doors that look alike can be quoted very differently.
The System You Choose
A sliding leaf, a casement leaf, a folding set and an automatic entrance are different pieces of engineering. The system is the single biggest line in any door quotation.
Profile Series and Wall Thickness
A deeper section with more material in it costs more and carries more. This is where quotations most often differ without the buyer being told.
Glass Specification
Clear toughened, laminated, double glazed, tinted and decorative glass all sit at different levels, and glass is a large share of the finished door.
Hardware and Locking
Handles, hinges, rollers, friction stays and multi-point locking vary widely by brand and grade, and they decide how the door feels every day.
Finish
Powder coating, anodising and wood finish are priced differently, and a non-standard shade usually carries a premium over a stock one.
Opening Size and Number of Leaves
Price follows the area of the opening and how many leaves that area is divided into, since each leaf brings its own frame, gasket and hardware.
Installation Scope
Whether measurement, fitting, sealing, finishing and disposal of the old frame are included changes the comparison completely.
Site Conditions
Floor level, access, the state of the existing opening and whether work happens around an occupied home all affect what installation actually takes.
How the Door Systems Compare on Cost
Ranked from most economical upward, with what the extra buys at each step.
| System | Relative Position | What the Difference Buys |
|---|---|---|
| Sliding doors and windows | Most economical of the systems | Simple running gear and no swing space needed |
| Casement doors and windows | A step above sliding | Compression sealing and hinge hardware, giving a tighter seal |
| Vertical sliding | Comparable to casement | Counterbalance mechanism and heritage sightlines |
| Tilt and turn | Above casement | Dual-action hardware doing two jobs from one handle |
| Slide and fold | Above tilt and turn | Multiple leaves, each with its own frame, gasket and running gear |
| Slim and frameless sliding | Premium | Narrow sections carrying large glass, with heavier hardware to match |
| Lift and slide | Premium | Geared mechanism lifting the leaf clear of its seal before it moves |
| Automatic entrance doors | Highest, varies with specification | Sensors, drive unit, controller and safety devices beyond the leaf itself |
Relative positions only. The actual rate for any system depends on the opening size, glass, hardware and finish specified against it.
Where a Cheap Quotation Hides Its Discount
Four places a lower rate is usually recovered, none of which show up in the total.
Thinner Sections
The commonest way one quotation undercuts another. Less aluminium in the section lowers the rate and lowers the strength with it, and nothing on the quote says so.
Downgraded Glass
A door quoted with ordinary glass against one quoted with toughened or laminated is not the same door, even where the frame specification matches exactly.
Unbranded Hardware
Handles, rollers, stays and locks are where a low rate is often recovered. They are also the parts a user touches daily and the first to fail.
Installation Left Out
A supply-only rate compared against a supply-and-fit rate will always look better until the fitting, sealing and finishing has to be paid for separately.
How to Read an Aluminium Door Quotation
Six lines that should appear on any quotation worth comparing.
Profile Series and Wall Thickness Stated
If the quotation does not name the section and its wall thickness, you cannot compare it with anything. Ask for it in writing before comparing rates.
Glass Type and Build Named
Toughened, laminated or double glazed should be stated explicitly, not described as glass. The difference is substantial on a finished door.
Hardware Brand and Grade
Named hardware can be checked. Unnamed hardware cannot, and it is usually where the gap between two similar-looking quotes sits.
Finish Specified
Powder coated, anodised or wood finish, with the shade named. A non-standard colour should appear as its own line rather than a surprise later.
Scope of Installation
Measurement, fitting, sealing, finishing and removal of the old frame should each be either included or excluded in writing.
Timeline and Payment Terms
Fabrication and installation dates confirmed in writing, so the rate can be judged alongside what it actually commits the supplier to.

Aluminium Door Price: FAQs
What buyers ask most when comparing door quotations.
How is an aluminium door price calculated?
Aluminium doors are normally quoted on the area of the opening, with the rate built up from the system chosen, the profile series and its wall thickness, the glass specification, the hardware brand and grade, the finish, and whether installation is included. Because the rate follows the opening, an accurate aluminium door price needs a site measurement rather than a rough size.
Why do two aluminium door quotations differ so much?
Almost always because the specifications are not the same, even when the drawings look identical. Section wall thickness, glass build, hardware brand and whether fitting is included are the four places the difference usually hides. Compare those four line by line before comparing the totals.
Which aluminium door system is the most economical?
Sliding systems are generally the most economical, followed by casement. Tilt and turn, slide and fold, slim frameless, lift and slide and automatic entrance doors each sit higher, because each adds mechanism, leaves or hardware beyond what a simple slider needs.
Is an aluminium door cheaper than a wooden door?
The comparison depends on the grade of each. Where aluminium consistently wins is over the life of the door: there is no repainting or polishing cycle, no swelling or warping to correct, and no termite damage to repair, so the cost after installation is largely limited to occasional cleaning.
Does the glass change the price of an aluminium door much?
Yes, considerably. Glass is a large share of a glazed door, so moving from ordinary glass to toughened, laminated or double glazed changes the total noticeably. It is also the change most worth making on ground floor, road-facing and west-facing openings.
Does an aluminium door price include installation?
It depends on the supplier, which is why it must be checked. Alurac quotes measurement, fabrication, fitting, sealing and finishing as part of the scope, and lists them so a supply-only rate from elsewhere can be compared fairly.
Why is a very cheap aluminium door quote risky?
Because the saving usually comes out of the section, the glass or the hardware rather than out of the supplier's margin. A thinner section flexes, lower grade glass is less safe, and unbranded hardware fails early. The rework normally costs more than the original saving.
How do I get an accurate price for my opening?
Share the opening sizes, a drawing or a few site photos, along with what the door has to do in terms of noise, heat, privacy and security. A site measurement then confirms the real openings, and the quotation is built against those rather than against an estimate.
Can an aluminium door be value engineered to fit a budget?
Yes, and it is better done deliberately than by accident. Glass specification, finish and hardware grade can each be adjusted where a particular opening does not need the highest level, while the section itself is kept correct for the span.
Does the price change for custom sizes or colours?
Doors are made to the measured opening as standard, so a non-standard size is not in itself a premium. A non-standard finish shade can carry one, and it should appear as its own line on the quotation rather than being absorbed silently into the rate.
